Advocacy Information

Since its inception, Aging Services of Arizona has remained on the forefront of political action and public policy development in Arizona.  Aging Services of Arizona’s advocacy efforts reflect its dedication to developing a continuum of healthcare, housing and services that is affordable, efficient and delivers quality housing, care, and services to meet the needs of Arizona’s senior citizens.  The Aging Services of Arizona Board of Directors and Policy and Governmental Affairs Committee, with input from the Aging Services of Arizona membership, craft a comprehensive Annual Advocacy Strategic Plan to guide the Association’s advocacy efforts during the Legislative Session and throughout the year.  With the help of Don Isaacson, Aging Services of Arizona’s lobbyist, and an effective grassroots network, Aging Services of Arizona has ensured its significant presence in both the legislative and regulatory arenas.

Aging Services of Arizona advances its advocacy efforts by providing members with timely legislative and advocacy updates, bill-status summaries, legislative hearing and committee meeting outcomes, and grassroots initiatives through Capitol Pace (a legislative update now sent via email), special alerts and other member communications.  To facilitate member’s timely and effective grassroots communications with Arizona state legislators, a direct on-line link to legislators is provided through Contact Your Legislator.

Due to its advocacy efforts, Aging Services of Arizona is able to achieve numerous successes during regular and special Legislative Sessions.  Aging Services of Arizona's intent is to pose a strong defense against legislation and regulatory proposals that could jeopardize members’ ability to continue to efficiently and cost-effectively provide quality healthcare, housing, and services to Arizona’s senior citizens.

Aging Services of Arizona’s advocacy efforts complement the public policy initiatives of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA), its national affiliate. Association leaders, staff, and members maintain ongoing relationships with the Arizona Congressional delegation through member visits to Capitol Hill, use of Contact Congress, AAHSA’s direct on-line advocacy initiative, and other communications.  Aging Services of Arizona, in collaboration with AAHSA, provides regular-detailed updates on National HUD housing, assisted living, retirement housing and nursing home public policy initiatives and programs to keep members informed.
